Each plot size occurs many times, so we use the frequency (weighted) mean: multiply each size by its number of plots, add, and divide by the total number of plots (260). The mean plot size is about 126.92 sq. metre.

Concept

When values repeat, we use a discrete frequency distribution. The mean is:

Xˉ=∑fX∑f\bar{X} = \frac{\sum fX}{\sum f}

where XX is the plot size and ff the number of plots of that size.

Working

Plot size XXNo. of plots fffXfX
10020020,000
2005010,000
300103,000
Total26033,000

Xˉ=33,000260=126.92\bar{X} = \frac{33{,}000}{260} = 126.92

Interpretation

Although the sizes are 100, 200 and 300, most plots are the smallest (100 sq. m), so the mean is close to 100 rather than the mid-value 200.

✓Final answer

Mean plot size = 126.92 sq. metre (approximately).
