Arthropods are the largest phylum, with a segmented body, chitinous exoskeleton, jointed appendages and open circulation; examples include cockroach, prawn and honeybee.

Characteristics of phylum Arthropoda:

  1. It is the largest phylum of the animal kingdom (includes over two-thirds of all known animal species).
  2. The body is triploblastic, bilaterally symmetrical, metamerically segmented and coelomate; it shows organ-system level of organisation.
  3. The body is usually divided into head, thorax and abdomen (or cephalothorax and abdomen).
  4. They have a hard chitinous exoskeleton (cuticle) which is periodically moulted (ecdysis).
  5. They possess jointed appendages (from which the name 'arthropoda' = jointed feet is derived), used for walking, feeding, etc.
  6. The circulatory system is open type, with blood (haemolymph) in body spaces (haemocoel).
