Arthropods are triploblastic, segmented, bilaterally symmetrical animals with jointed appendages and a chitinous exoskeleton, forming the largest animal phylum.

General characteristics of Phylum Arthropoda:

  1. Body organisation: Triploblastic (three germ layers), bilaterally symmetrical, and coelomate animals.

  2. Segmentation: The body shows metameric segmentation (division into a series of similar segments), and is usually divided into distinct regions — head, thorax and abdomen (or a fused cephalothorax and abdomen in some groups).

  3. Exoskeleton: The body is covered by a hard, chitinous exoskeleton, which is periodically shed and replaced as the animal grows (moulting/ecdysis).

  4. Appendages: Arthropods possess jointed appendages (the name 'Arthropoda' literally means 'jointed feet') — legs, antennae and mouthparts are all jointed, allowing flexible, efficient movement.

  5. Circulatory system: The circulatory system is of the open type, in which blood (haemolymph) flows through large sinuses/spaces called the haemocoel rather than being confined entirely to vessels.
