The human heart is a four-chambered (2 atria + 2 ventricles) muscular pump in a pericardial sac, with valves for one-way flow and the SA node as pacemaker.

Structure of the human heart (NCERT Class 11 Biology, Body Fluids and Circulation):

  • Location and covering: a hollow, muscular organ located in the thoracic cavity between the lungs, made of cardiac muscle and enclosed in a double-walled membranous sac, the pericardium, containing pericardial fluid that reduces friction.

  • Chambers (four):

    • Two upper thin-walled atria (right and left), separated by the inter-atrial septum.
    • Two lower thick-walled ventricles (right and left), separated by the inter-ventricular septum. The left ventricle has the thickest wall as it pumps blood to the whole body.
  • Valves (ensure one-way blood flow):

    • Tricuspid valve — between the right atrium and right ventricle.
    • Bicuspid (mitral) valve — between the left atrium and left ventricle.
    • Semilunar valves — at the openings of the pulmonary artery and aorta.
  • Blood flow: the right side handles deoxygenated blood (right atrium → right ventricle → pulmonary artery → lungs); the left side handles oxygenated blood (from lungs → left atrium → left ventricle → aorta → body). This is double circulation.
