Blood and lymph differ in their formed elements and pathway; basophils and eosinophils differ in abundance and role; the tricuspid and bicuspid valves differ in cusp number and the side of the heart they guard.

a. Blood and Lymph. Blood is a fluid connective tissue made of plasma (its fluid matrix) and the formed elements — erythrocytes, leucocytes and platelets — circulating within the closed network of blood vessels under the heart's pumping action. Lymph, or tissue fluid, is the fluid that has escaped from blood capillaries into the spaces between tissue cells; it is colourless, carries specialised lymphocytes but not the larger plasma proteins or the other formed elements, and is collected by a separate network of lymphatic vessels that eventually drains it back into the major veins.

b. Basophils and Eosinophils. Basophils are the least common of the white blood cells, making up only about 0.5 to 1 per cent of the total; they secrete substances such as histamine, serotonin and heparin and take part in inflammatory reactions. Eosinophils are more numerous, at about 2 to 3 per cent, and they resist infections while also being linked to allergic reactions. …
