Prokaryotes lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; eukaryotes have both.

Differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells:

  1. Nucleus:
  • Prokaryotic cell — has no true (membrane-bound) nucleus; the genetic material (a single circular DNA) lies naked in the cytoplasm in a region called the nucleoid.

  • Eukaryotic cell — has a well-organised nucleus bounded by a nuclear membrane, with DNA organised into chromosomes.

  1. Membrane-bound organelles:
  • Prokaryotic cell — lacks membrane-bound organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and plastids; it has 70S ribosomes.
  • Eukaryotic cell — possesses these membrane-bound organelles and has 80S ribosomes (70S in its mitochondria/plastids). …
