Prokaryotic cells lack a true nucleus and membrane-bound organelles; eukaryotic cells possess both.

Two key points of difference:

  1. Nuclear organisation: In prokaryotic cells (e.g., bacteria), the genetic material (DNA) lies directly in the cytoplasm as a nucleoid, without a nuclear membrane around it. In eukaryotic cells (e.g., plant and animal cells), the DNA is enclosed within a well-defined nucleus, bound by a double nuclear membrane (nuclear envelope).

  2. Membrane-bound organelles: Prokaryotic cells lack membrane-bound cell organelles such as mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, endoplasmic reticulum, lysosomes, and plastids. Eukaryotic cells possess all of these well-developed, membrane-bound organelles, allowing compartmentalisation of cellular functions.
