The nephron forms urine by glomerular filtration, tubular reabsorption and tubular secretion.

The nephron is the structural and functional unit of the kidney (each kidney has about a million nephrons). Its role is to filter the blood and form urine, thereby removing nitrogenous wastes and maintaining water and salt balance. Urine formation occurs in three main steps:

  1. Glomerular filtration (ultrafiltration) — blood is filtered under pressure in the glomerulus within the Bowman's capsule; water and small molecules pass into the tubule as the filtrate, while blood cells and proteins are retained.
  2. Tubular reabsorption — as the filtrate flows along the tubule, useful substances (glucose, amino acids, most of the water and essential ions) are reabsorbed back into the blood. …
