Symbiotic nitrogen fixation is the fixation of free atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into a usable combined form (ammonia) by micro-organisms that live in a mutually beneficial (symbiotic) association with a host plant. The best example is the bacterium Rhizobium, which lives in the root nodules of leguminous plants (pea, gram, bean). Inside the nodule the bacterium, using the enzyme nitrogenase, reduces N2 to ammonia, which the plant uses to make proteins; in return the plant supplies the bacterium with food and shelter.
