Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants and some other organisms synthesise their own food (carbohydrate) from carbon dioxide and water, using light energy trapped by the green pigment chlorophyll, and release oxygen. It is summarised as:
6CO2 + 12H2O --(light, chlorophyll)--> C6H12O6 + 6O2 + 6H2O
It occurs in the chloroplasts and has two phases — the light reaction (in the grana) and the dark reaction (in the stroma).
Main events of the light reaction (photochemical phase):
- Absorption of light: Chlorophyll and other pigments in the thylakoid membranes of the grana absorb light energy and become excited, releasing energetic electrons.
- Photolysis (splitting) of water: The absorbed energy splits water molecules into hydrogen ions, electrons and oxygen. The oxygen is released as a by-product (2H2O -> 4H+ + 4e- + O2).
- Electron transport and ATP formation: The excited electrons pass through an electron transport chain; the energy released is used to form ATP from ADP (photophosphorylation). …
