The light reaction traps light energy and splits water in the thylakoid, producing ATP, NADPH and O2; the dark (Calvin cycle) reaction uses that ATP/NADPH in the stroma to fix CO2 into sugar, without needing light directly.

FeatureLight reactionDark reaction (Calvin cycle)
LocationThylakoid membrane of the chloroplastStroma of the chloroplast
Light requirementRequires light directlyDoes not require light directly (uses ATP/NADPH made earlier)
WaterWater is split (photolysis), releasing O2Water is not split here
Main productsATP, NADPH, and O2Glucose (carbohydrate); ADP and NADP+ are regenerated
CO2 involvementNot involvedCO2 is fixed onto RuBP by RuBisCO
