Photoperiodism is the effect of day length (light/dark duration) on flowering and other responses in plants.

What is photoperiodism?

Photoperiodism is the physiological response of plants to the relative lengths of the light (day) and dark (night) periods. It especially controls the flowering of many plants. On this basis, plants are grouped as:

  • Short-day plants (SDP) — flower when the day length is shorter than a critical period (they actually need a long uninterrupted dark period), e.g. Chrysanthemum, rice.
  • Long-day plants (LDP) — flower when the day length is longer than a critical period, e.g. wheat, radish.
