Long day plants (LDP) require light for a period longer than a critical (threshold) length to flower, whereas short day plants (SDP) require a period shorter than a critical length — i.e., they need a sufficiently long, uninterrupted dark period to flower.

Flowering in many plants is regulated by the relative lengths of day and night, a phenomenon called photoperiodism.

Long Day Plants (LDP): Flower only when they receive light for a duration longer than a critical photoperiod (equivalently, a night shorter than a critical dark period). They typically flower in late spring/early summer, when days are longest. Examples: spinach, radish, wheat.
