In a substitution reaction, one atom or group of atoms in a molecule is replaced by a different atom or group, leaving the rest of the molecule's structure unchanged.

A substitution reaction is a type of organic reaction in which an atom or a group of atoms present in a compound is displaced/replaced by another atom or group of atoms, without any change in the degree of saturation or the basic carbon skeleton of the molecule.

Example: the free-radical halogenation of methane. When methane is treated with chlorine in the presence of sunlight (or UV light), one hydrogen atom of methane is substituted by a chlorine atom, producing chloromethane and hydrogen chloride:

CH4+Cl2→sunlightCH3Cl+HClCH_4 + Cl_2 \xrightarrow{\text{sunlight}} CH_3Cl + HCl
