3d electron: n = 3, l = 2, m = -2 to +2; Pauli forbids two electrons with identical quantum numbers.

(a) Quantum numbers for an electron in a 3d orbital:

  • Principal quantum number n = 3 (third shell).
  • Azimuthal quantum number l = 2 (d subshell).
  • Magnetic quantum number m = -l to +l = -2, -1, 0, +1, +2 (the five 3d orbitals). (The spin quantum number s would be +1/2 or -1/2.)

(b) Pauli's exclusion principle: No two electrons in the same atom can have the same set of all four quantum numbers (n, l, m, s). Equivalently, an orbital can hold a maximum of two electrons, and these must have opposite spins.
