Four quantum numbers (n, l, m, s) uniquely describe the energy, shape, orientation and spin state of every electron in an atom.

Quantum numbers are a set of numbers used to completely and unambiguously describe the position, energy, and other properties of an electron in an atom.

1. Principal quantum number (n): n = 1, 2, 3, ... Significance: determines the main energy level (shell) of the electron and, largely, its distance from the nucleus and its energy — a higher n means a larger orbital and (generally) higher energy.

2. Azimuthal (angular momentum) quantum number (l): l = 0 to (n-1). Significance: determines the shape of the orbital and identifies the sub-shell within a given shell (l = 0 → s, l = 1 → p, l = 2 → d, l = 3 → f); it is also related to the orbital angular momentum of the electron.

3. Magnetic quantum number (m or ml): m = -l to +l (through 0), giving (2l+1) values. Significance: determines the spatial orientation of the orbital (e.g. px, py, pz), and hence the number of orbitals available within a subshell.

4. Spin quantum number (s or ms): values +1/2 or -1/2. Significance: describes the direction of spin (intrinsic angular momentum) of the electron about its own axis; it is essential for explaining fine spectral line splitting and for the Pauli Exclusion Principle.
