Negation of a statement

The negation of a statement is simply its denial — the statement that says the opposite of what the original says.

Definition. If p is a statement, then its negation is also a statement, written ∼p\sim p and read "not p".

To form a negation in words, we can prefix phrases like "It is not the case that ..." or "It is false that ...", or rephrase directly. For p: "New Delhi is a city", the negation can be expressed as "It is not the case that New Delhi is a city", or more simply, "New Delhi is not a city." …
