Q.Give three examples of sentences which are not statements. Give reasons for the answers.
A statement must be a declarative sentence with one definite truth value. The following three sentences fail this test for different reasons:
-
"Please close the door." — This is a command/request (imperative sentence), not a declarative claim. It cannot be judged true or false. Not a statement.
-
"What is your name?" — This is a question (interrogative sentence). Questions have no truth value at all. Not a statement.
-
"She is a brilliant singer." — Whether this is true depends entirely on subjective judgment (and on who "she" is), so it has no fixed, universally agreed truth value. Not a statement.
"Please close the door" (command), "What is your name?" (question), "She is a brilliant singer" (opinion) — none has a fixed truth value.
