Absolute zero is the temperature at which, according to kinetic theory, the translational kinetic energy of gas molecules becomes zero.

From kinetic theory, the average translational kinetic energy per molecule of a gas is directly proportional to its absolute temperature:

12mv2‾=32kBT\dfrac{1}{2}m\overline{v^2} = \dfrac{3}{2}k_BT

As the absolute temperature TT is lowered, the average kinetic energy (and hence the rms speed) of the gas molecules keeps decreasing. Absolute zero (0 K, or −273.15°C-273.15°C) is defined as the theoretical temperature at which this average translational kinetic energy of the molecules becomes exactly zero — i.e. all random molecular motion (in the classical sense) would cease.
