Newton's 2nd law: F = dp/dt = ma — force equals rate of change of momentum.

Newton's second law of motion states that the rate of change of linear momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied external force and takes place in the direction of the force.

If p = mv is the momentum, then

F ∝ dp/dt, i.e. F = k·dp/dt.

For constant mass, dp/dt = m(dv/dt) = ma, and choosing the SI unit (the newton) makes k = 1, so
