Newton's Second Law says force equals the rate of change of momentum; for constant mass this becomes F = ma.

Statement: Newton's Second Law of Motion states that the rate of change of linear momentum of a body is directly proportional to the applied external force, and this change takes place in the direction in which the force acts.

Mathematically:

dp/dt is proportional to F, i.e. dp/dt = k F, for some constant k.

Deduction of F = ma: Momentum is defined as p = mv. If the mass m of the body remains constant, then:

dp/dt = d(mv)/dt = m (dv/dt) = m a

where a = dv/dt is the acceleration of the body.

Substituting into the proportionality: m a = k F
