Strategies to close this gap:
- Inquiry-based science education: shift school and college science teaching away from rote memorisation of facts toward teaching the method of science — forming hypotheses, testing them, weighing evidence — so people carry a habit of rational inquiry into everyday life, not just exam answers.
- Public science communication: actively explain natural, testable causes for phenomena that get attributed to supernatural causes (much as the crab-shell example in Q6 of this chapter shows a 'mysterious' pattern has a natural, testable explanation) through media, exhibitions, and community outreach, rather than assuming exposure to technology alone will dispel superstition.
- Respectful engagement, not ridicule: strategies that mock or belittle believers tend to entrench positions; explaining why a claim fails to hold up to evidence, and demonstrating alternative natural explanations, is generally more persuasive than dismissal.
- Demonstrating tangible benefits: showing communities the concrete benefits science already delivers (vaccination, better crop yields, clean water) builds trust in the scientific approach as something that works, which can generalise to greater openness toward rational explanations elsewhere. …
