Thermal conductivity K is the amount of heat conducted per second through a unit cross-section of a material, per unit temperature gradient.

For steady-state conduction through a slab of material of thickness dd, cross-sectional area AA, with the two faces maintained at temperatures T1T_1 and T2T_2 (T1>T2T_1 > T_2), the rate of heat flow is given by:

dQdt=KA(T1−T2)d\dfrac{dQ}{dt} = KA\dfrac{(T_1-T_2)}{d}

Here, KK is the coefficient (or coefficient) of thermal conductivity of the material — it measures how readily heat is conducted through that particular material. Rearranging:

K=(dQ/dt) dA(T1−T2)K = \dfrac{(dQ/dt)\,d}{A(T_1-T_2)}
