Thermal conductivity KK quantifies a material's ability to conduct heat, defined via Q/t=KAΔθ/dQ/t = KA\Delta\theta/d; SI unit W m−1K−1\text{W m}^{-1}\text{K}^{-1}.

Step 1 — Definition.

Consider a slab of material of thickness dd and cross-sectional area AA, with its two faces maintained at temperatures θ1\theta_1 and θ2\theta_2 (θ1>θ2\theta_1 > \theta_2). The rate of heat flow Q/tQ/t through the slab by conduction is found (Fourier's law) to be directly proportional to AA and to the temperature difference (θ1−θ2)(\theta_1-\theta_2), and inversely proportional to the thickness dd:

Qt=KA(θ1−θ2)d\frac{Q}{t} = \frac{KA(\theta_1-\theta_2)}{d}

The proportionality constant KK, characteristic of the material, is called the coefficient of thermal conductivity.

Step 2 — Meaning.

KK measures how readily heat flows through a material by conduction — a high KK (e.g. metals) means the material conducts heat easily; a low KK (e.g. wood, air) means it is a poor conductor (a good insulator).

Step 3 — SI unit. …
