In transverse waves, particles vibrate perpendicular to wave propagation; in longitudinal waves, particles vibrate along the same direction as propagation.

Transverse waves: the particles of the medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels. The disturbance appears as alternating crests (highs) and troughs (lows). Example: waves on a stretched string, light waves (electromagnetic), water surface waves. Transverse mechanical waves can only travel through a medium that can sustain shear stress — so they propagate through solids and surfaces, but not through the bulk of a fluid.
