Sound speed in air is unaffected by pressure changes at constant temperature because pressure and density both scale together, leaving their ratio (and hence speed) unchanged.

The speed of sound in a gas (from Laplace's correction to Newton's formula) is:

v=γPρv = \sqrt{\dfrac{\gamma P}{\rho}}

For a fixed mass of gas held at a constant temperature, Boyle's law gives P∝ρP \propto \rho (density) — if pressure is increased, the gas is compressed and its density increases in direct proportion (since PV=constantPV = \text{constant} at fixed TT, and V∝1/ρV \propto 1/\rho).
