Importance of training. Training is the process of increasing the knowledge and skills of an employee for doing a particular job. It is important for several reasons:
- Improves performance and productivity — trained workers do their jobs better and faster, raising the quantity and quality of output.
- Reduces errors, accidents and wastage — skilled employees make fewer mistakes, handle machines safely and waste less material.
- Reduces supervision — trained workers are more self-reliant, so less close supervision is needed.
- Raises morale and reduces labour turnover — training makes employees confident and satisfied, so they stay longer with the firm.
- Prepares for change and advancement — it equips staff to use new technology and methods and to take up higher responsibilities and promotions.
Methods of training fall into two broad groups:
On-the-job methods (the employee learns while actually doing the work):
- Apprenticeship training — learning a skilled trade under an expert over a period of time.
- Coaching — a superior guides and instructs the trainee at work.
- Job rotation — shifting the employee through different jobs to give varied experience.
- Internship training — combining institutional study with practical work in the firm.
