A. On-the-job methods — the employee is trained at the actual workplace while performing the real job, learning by doing. Common methods are:
- Apprenticeship training — the trainee works under a skilled master for a fixed period to learn a trade (e.g. plumbers, electricians, fitters).
- Internship training — a joint programme of an institute and a business firm, where students gain practical experience alongside theory.
- Coaching — a superior guides and instructs the trainee like a coach, giving continuous feedback.
- Job rotation — the trainee is shifted from one job/department to another to gain wide, all-round experience.
B. Off-the-job methods — training is given away from the actual job, usually in a classroom or special area. Common methods are:
- Classroom lectures / conferences — knowledge is given through lectures, seminars and group discussions.
- Vestibule training — a duplicate (model) of the actual workplace with the same machines is set up so trainees can practise without disturbing real production; useful where on-the-job training would be costly or risky.
