Vakrasana (Twisted Pose) is the chapter's own asana for back pain. Its procedure is described below, but the chapter's source material does not document a specific asthma mechanism for it — that connection is not catalogue-grounded and should not be overstated.

Procedure of Vakrasana (Twisted Pose)

Sit in Dandasana (Staff Pose), legs extended straight ahead. Bend the left knee and place the left foot on the floor outside the right knee. Twist the upper body to the left, bracing the right elbow against the outside of the left knee to lever the twist, and place the left hand on the floor behind the back, close to the spine, for support. Turn the head and gaze toward the wall behind. Hold the pose for a comfortable count, breathing normally, then release and repeat the whole sequence mirrored on the other side.

Benefits

As catalogued in this chapter (under back pain), Vakrasana tones the back muscles and brings spinal stability. It corrects a sagging-shoulder or slouched posture, strengthens the neck muscles, and tones internal organs, including the digestive system, intestines, uterus and kidneys. It also activates the thyroid gland, supporting a balanced hormone level.

Contraindications

Avoid Vakrasana with a back injury, since the twist can put pressure on and aggravate the sciatic nerve. It should be avoided during pregnancy, as the twist can cause discomfort to the uterus, and people with weak neck muscles or upper-spine problems should be cautious, since turning the whole neck can strain those muscles.
