Adenosine Deaminase (ADA), an enzyme vital for a healthy immune system, is primarily produced in the lymphocytes within the human body.

The ability to manipulate genetic material has revolutionized medicine, allowing us to produce crucial biological molecules outside the human body. For instance, transgenic bacteria are engineered to produce human proteins like insulin or growth hormone on a large scale. This biotechnological marvel also extends to enzymes like Adenosine Deaminase (ADA), which can be produced in laboratories for therapeutic applications. However, within the human body, ADA is naturally synthesized by specific cells to maintain essential physiological functions.

Adenosine Deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the purine metabolism pathway. Its primary function is to catalyze the deamination of adenosine and deoxyadenosine, converting them into inosine and deoxyinosine, respectively. This process is crucial because the accumulation of adenosine and deoxyadenosine can be toxic, particularly to developing lymphocytes.

Important

ADA is indispensable for the proper functioning of the immune system. Without it, the body's ability to fight off infections is severely compromised.

A deficiency in ADA leads to a severe genetic disorder known as Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID). In individuals with SCID, the absence of functional ADA results in the buildup of toxic metabolites, especially deoxyadenosine triphosphate (dATP). This dATP is particularly harmful to lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell central to the adaptive immune response. The toxicity impairs the development and function of both B-lymphocytes and T-lymphocytes, rendering the immune system virtually non-functional. …
