A food chain is a straight-line transfer of food energy from producers through a series of consumers.

A food chain is the sequence of living organisms in an ecosystem arranged according to who eats whom, showing the transfer of food and energy from one trophic (feeding) level to the next. It always begins with producers (green plants), which trap solar energy, and passes to a series of consumers.

Example (grazing food chain):

grass (producer) → grasshopper (primary consumer, herbivore) → frog (secondary consumer) → snake (tertiary consumer) → hawk (top carnivore).
