Xerosere is dry-habitat succession from bare rock through lichens, mosses, herbs, shrubs to a climax forest, each stage preparing the way for the next.

Xerosere is the ecological succession (a sequence of communities replacing one another over time) that starts in a xeric (dry) habitat such as bare rock, where there is no soil and very little water. The successive communities (seres) are:

  1. Crustose lichen stage (pioneer community): crustose lichens (e.g. Rhizocarpon) are the first colonisers of bare rock. They secrete acids that weather and corrode the rock, and on dying add tiny amounts of organic matter, beginning soil formation.

  2. Foliose lichen stage: leaf-like foliose lichens grow over the thin substratum. They retain more water and further break down the rock and build up more soil and humus.

  3. Moss stage: mosses (e.g. Polytrichum, Funaria) now grow in the thin soil, forming mats that trap dust and moisture and add more organic matter, deepening the soil.

  4. Herb stage: with enough soil, small annual and then perennial herbs and grasses colonise the area, their roots binding the soil and their remains enriching it.

  5. Shrub stage: as soil deepens and holds more water, shrubs (e.g. Rhus, Zizyphus) invade and shade out many herbs, further improving soil.

  6. Climax (forest) stage: finally trees grow, forming a stable, self-perpetuating climax community (a forest) in balance with the climate. This is the end point of the xerosere.
