An ecosystem = abiotic components (light, temperature, water, soil, nutrients) + biotic components (producers, consumers and decomposers) interacting together.

An ecosystem is a functional unit of nature where living organisms interact among themselves and with the surrounding physical environment. Its components are:

A. Abiotic components (non-living):

These are the physical and chemical factors of the environment. They include —

  • Climatic factors: sunlight, temperature, water, humidity, rainfall, wind and air (CO2, O2).
  • Edaphic/inorganic factors: soil, its texture and pH, minerals and inorganic nutrients (C, N, P, etc.), and organic substances (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, humus). These factors determine the type of organisms an ecosystem can support and influence all the functions of the ecosystem.

B. Biotic components (living):

Based on their nutritional role, the organisms are grouped into three categories:

  1. Producers (Autotrophs) — Chiefly green plants (and photosynthetic algae/bacteria) which trap solar energy and manufacture food through photosynthesis. They form the base of every food chain and fix energy for the whole ecosystem.

  2. Consumers (Heterotrophs) — Organisms that depend on producers or other consumers for food. They are of types:

    • Primary consumers (herbivores) — feed on plants, e.g. cow, deer, grasshopper.
    • Secondary consumers (primary carnivores) — feed on herbivores, e.g. frog, fox.
    • Tertiary consumers (top carnivores) — feed on secondary consumers, e.g. lion, hawk. …
