Primary productivity = rate of biomass production by autotrophs; secondary productivity = rate of new biomass formation by heterotrophs (consumers).

Productivity is the rate of biomass production in an ecosystem, expressed as weight (g) or energy (kcal) per unit area per unit time.

Primary productivity:

  • It is the amount of biomass or organic matter produced per unit area over a time period by plants and other autotrophs during photosynthesis.
  • It is divided into Gross Primary Productivity (GPP) — the total rate of organic matter fixed in photosynthesis — and Net Primary Productivity (NPP) = GPP minus respiratory losses (R). NPP is the biomass available to herbivores and decomposers.
  • It depends on the plant species, availability of nutrients, water, sunlight and the photosynthetic capacity of the plants.

Secondary productivity:

  • It is the rate of formation of new organic matter (biomass) by consumers (heterotrophs). …
