Humus is the dark, partly decomposed, slow-decomposing organic matter of soil; it makes soil fertile, porous, well-aerated and improves its water-holding capacity.

During decomposition, the detritus (dead organic matter) is broken down by decomposers through fragmentation, leaching, catabolism, humification and mineralisation. Humification is the step that produces humus.

Humus:

  • It is a dark-coloured, amorphous (structureless) substance that is highly resistant to microbial action and therefore undergoes decomposition at an extremely slow rate.
  • Being colloidal in nature it serves as a reservoir of nutrients.
