Decomposition is the breakdown of dead organic matter (detritus) into simple inorganic substances by decomposers; steps — fragmentation, leaching, catabolism, humification, mineralisation.

Decomposition is the process by which decomposers (fungi and bacteria — called saprotrophs) break down complex dead organic matter (detritus: dead plants, animals, faecal matter) into simple inorganic substances such as CO2CO_2, water and mineral nutrients. It occurs in five overlapping steps:

  1. Fragmentation — detritivores (e.g. earthworms) break the detritus into smaller particles, increasing surface area.
  2. Leaching — water-soluble inorganic nutrients dissolve and percolate down into the soil, getting precipitated as unavailable salts.
  3. Catabolism — enzymes secreted by bacteria and fungi degrade the detritus into simpler compounds.
  4. Humification — accumulation of a dark-coloured, amorphous, highly resistant substance called humus, which is a reservoir of nutrients. …
