Case Study of Remedy for Plastic Waste
A Bangalore-based manufacturer of plastic sacks found a practical answer to the growing problem of plastic waste piling up in the city. Ahmed Khan, who had been producing plastic sacks for about twenty years, realised around eight years earlier that plastic waste was becoming a genuine crisis. His company responded by developing Polyblend, a fine powder made from recycled, modified plastic.
Polyblend is blended into the bitumen used to surface roads. Working with R.V. College of Engineering and the Bangalore City Corporation, Ahmed Khan demonstrated that mixing Polyblend into bitumen improved the bitumen's water-repellent properties and extended the life of the road surface roughly threefold. …
