Biomagnification (biological magnification) is the phenomenon in which the concentration of a toxic, persistent, non-biodegradable substance increases at each successive trophic level of a food chain.
How it happens: pollutants such as DDT and mercury are not metabolised or excreted; they dissolve in fat and are stored in the body. A producer takes up a small amount; a herbivore eating many producers accumulates more; a carnivore eating many herbivores accumulates still more. So the concentration keeps rising up the food chain.
