Biomagnification refers to the increase in concentration of a toxic, non-biodegradable (persistent) substance as it moves progressively through the different trophic levels of a food chain — from producers to primary consumers to secondary consumers and so on. Because such substances cannot be broken down or excreted easily, they accumulate in the body of an organism (bioaccumulation) and are then passed on and further concentrated at each higher trophic level, since predators eat many prey and thus consume the accumulated toxin from all of them.
