Cell-mediated immunity is protection provided by T-lymphocytes that directly kill infected/foreign cells; it does not involve antibodies and is the basis of graft rejection.

Cell-mediated immunity is a component of the acquired (specific) immune response.

  • It is mediated by T-lymphocytes (T-cells), which mature in the thymus.
  • When a pathogen (or foreign/altered cell) is encountered, T-cells recognise the antigen and are activated.
  • The T-cells then act directly against the target: cytotoxic T-cells destroy virus-infected cells, tumour cells and cells of transplanted (grafted) tissue; helper T-cells release chemicals (cytokines) that assist the immune response.
  • Because the response is carried out by the cells themselves rather than by circulating antibodies, it is called cell-mediated immunity. …
