Cell-mediated immunity is carried out directly by cells and defends mainly against pathogens hiding inside host cells (such as virus-infected cells) and abnormal cells such as tumour cells. An antigen-presenting cell displays fragments of an intracellular antigen, activating matching cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CTLs). An activated CTL binds directly to the infected or abnormal target cell and releases perforin, which punches pores in the target's membrane, and granzymes, protease enzymes that pass through these pores and trigger the target cell to undergo apoptosis (programmed cell death), destroying the target cell (and the pathogen inside it). …
