(A) Implantation is the embedding of the blastocyst into the uterine endometrium, beginning pregnancy; (B) autogamy is self-pollination within the same flower.

(A) Implantation:

  • After fertilisation in the fallopian tube, the zygote undergoes cleavage as it moves towards the uterus and forms a blastocyst.
  • The blastocyst has an outer layer of cells called the trophoblast and an inner cell mass.
  • The trophoblast layer gets attached to the endometrium (inner lining of the uterus).
  • The blastocyst then becomes embedded in the endometrium; this process is called implantation. It usually occurs about 6–7 days after fertilisation.
  • Implantation leads to pregnancy; the inner cell mass differentiates into the embryo.

(B) Autogamy:

  • Autogamy is a type of self-pollination.
  • In autogamy, the pollen grains from the anther of a flower are transferred to the stigma of the same flower.
  • This requires that the anther and stigma lie close together and that pollen is released when the stigma is receptive (synchrony in the maturation of anther and stigma). …
