Diagram description: the foetus floats in amniotic fluid within the amniotic sac inside the uterus, attached by the umbilical cord to the placenta on the uterine wall; the labels are uterus wall, foetus, amnion, amniotic fluid, placenta, umbilical cord and cervix.

Note: A drawn figure cannot be reproduced here, so the diagram is described so it can be drawn and labelled correctly.

How to draw the embryo/foetus inside the human uterus:

  1. Draw a large pear-shaped uterus (thick muscular wall = myometrium, lined inside by the endometrium).
  2. Inside it, draw the foetus in a curled position.
  3. Around the foetus draw a sac (the amnion) enclosing the amniotic cavity filled with amniotic fluid, in which the foetus floats. (The chorion lies outside the amnion.)
  4. On the upper/side wall of the uterus draw the placenta — a disc-shaped structure attached to the uterine wall through which exchange of nutrients, gases and wastes occurs between mother and foetus.
  5. Connect the foetus (at its navel) to the placenta by the umbilical cord, which contains the umbilical blood vessels.
  6. At the lower narrow end of the uterus show the cervix opening into the vagina. …
