DNA is an antiparallel right-handed double helix whose two strands are joined by complementary A=T / G≡C hydrogen bonding.

Salient features of the Watson–Crick double-helix model of DNA:

  1. Two antiparallel strands / helical shape: DNA consists of two polynucleotide chains with a sugar–phosphate backbone on the outside and nitrogen bases projecting inward. The two chains run antiparallel (one 5'→3', the other 3'→5') and are coiled around a common axis into a right-handed double helix.
