DNA is a right-handed antiparallel double helix with a sugar-phosphate backbone and complementary base pairs (A=T, G≡C) — to be drawn and labelled.

Dna double helix

Structure of DNA (Watson–Crick model):

  1. DNA is made of two polynucleotide chains (strands). Each nucleotide consists of a deoxyribose sugar, a phosphate group and a nitrogenous base (purines: adenine A, guanine G; pyrimidines: cytosine C, thymine T).
  2. The two strands are joined by hydrogen bonds between complementary bases: adenine pairs with thymine (A = T) by two hydrogen bonds, and guanine pairs with cytosine (G ≡ C) by three hydrogen bonds.
  3. The two strands are antiparallel — one runs 5'→3' and the other 3'→5'.
  4. The sugar and phosphate form the backbone (the two rails), while the base pairs form the rungs of the ladder. …
