Transcription is the synthesis of RNA from a DNA template strand by RNA polymerase.

Transcription is the process by which the genetic information stored in DNA is copied into a messenger RNA (mRNA) molecule. It is the first step of gene expression and occurs in the nucleus in eukaryotes.

Key points:

  1. Only one of the two DNA strands, the template (antisense) strand running 3'-to-5', is transcribed. The other strand is the coding (sense) strand.
  2. The enzyme RNA polymerase carries out transcription.
  3. It occurs in three stages:
    • Initiation: RNA polymerase binds to the promoter region and unwinds the DNA.
