(A) DNA is stable because it lacks the reactive 2'-OH of ribose, is double-stranded, and uses thymine; (B) a transcription unit has a promoter (start/RNA polymerase binding), a structural gene (template) and a terminator (stop).

(A) Why the stability of DNA is higher than that of RNA:

  1. Absence of 2'-OH group: DNA has deoxyribose sugar, which lacks the hydroxyl (-OH) group at the 2' position, whereas RNA has ribose sugar with a reactive 2'-OH group. This 2'-OH group makes RNA chemically labile (reactive) and easily degraded. Its absence makes DNA chemically much more stable.
  2. Double-stranded nature: DNA is double-stranded, with the two strands held by hydrogen bonds; this makes it structurally stable and its structure can be repaired. RNA is usually single-stranded and hence less stable.
  3. Presence of thymine: DNA contains thymine in place of uracil (present in RNA). The extra methyl group in thymine gives it additional stability and protection. Because of these features DNA is more stable and is therefore the preferred genetic material for storing hereditary information.

(B) Roles of the three parts of a transcription unit:

A transcription unit in DNA has three regions:

  1. Promoter: It is located towards the 5' end (upstream) of the structural gene. It provides the site where RNA polymerase binds and initiates transcription. It defines the template and coding strands. …
