An operon is a co-ordinated unit of gene expression made of a promoter, an operator, structural genes and a controlling regulator gene.

An operon is a segment of bacterial DNA that acts as a single unit of gene regulation, so that a group of related genes is switched on or off together. The concept was proposed by Jacob and Monod for the lac operon of E. coli.
