Xerophytes are plants of dry habitats with structural and physiological adaptations to reduce water loss and conserve water.

Xerophytes are plants that grow in dry (arid or desert) habitats where water is scarce. To survive drought and reduce water loss, they show a number of ecological adaptations:

Morphological adaptations:

  1. Roots: well-developed, deep and extensive root systems to absorb water from deep soil layers.
  2. Stem: often thick, fleshy and green (succulent) to store water and carry out photosynthesis; may be covered with wax or hairs.
  3. Leaves: reduced in size, sometimes modified into spines (e.g. cactus) to check transpiration; may be thick, leathery or covered with a waxy cuticle.

Anatomical adaptations:

4. A thick cuticle and waxy coating on the epidermis reduce evaporation.

5. Stomata are fewer, small and sunken in pits (often lined with hairs) to reduce transpiration.

6. Water-storage (succulent) tissues (parenchyma) are present.
