Pre-fertilisation Events

Pre-fertilisation events cover everything that happens in sexual reproduction before the male and female gametes actually meet and fuse. Two processes make up this stage:

• Gametogenesis — the production of the male and female gametes themselves, through cell division within the reproductive organs or structures of the parent organism(s).
• Gamete transfer — the physical movement of the gametes (most often the smaller, motile male gamete) so that they come close enough to the female gamete for fusion to occur. …
